healthier, cleaner teeth with our dental hygienist

Enjoy healthier, cleaner teeth by having regular visits with our dental hygienist

5* Experience at Riverside Dental today. I had an appointment booked to see the dental hygienist Amy alongside nurse Kayla for a clean (scale & polish). Very pleased with the outcome and I felt very welcomed during the appointment. After the appointment, I had a few questions which Amy answered articulately. I would definitely recommend using Riverside Dental.

Scale and polish

A ‘scale and polish’ is the term used to describe a professional dental clean that is performed in-office, usually by your hygienist.

The purpose of scaling and polishing is to remove the hard tartar that forms on your teeth like the scale inside a kettle. Tartar is hardened plaque, that wasn’t removed using a regular toothbrush or floss quickly enough. Unfortunately, you can’t remove tartar just by brushing your teeth. Instead, professional equipment is needed to eliminate it.

Scaling also removed trapped food and plaque that may still be present on your teeth despite brushing. Removing this promptly doesn’t only stop it turning into tartar. It will also help prevent decay and staining.

How is scaling and polishing performed?

Scaling and polishing can be carried out using either manual or electric scalers and polishers. Manual scalers come in different sizes, which may mean your hygienist has to switch which one they are using depending on where in your mouth they are working. Meanwhile, electric scalers use very fast vibrations with water to successfully remove the tartar from your teeth.

What are the benefits of scaling and polishing?

There are a number of benefits associated with scaling and polishing:

  • It helps to keep your teeth and gums healthy by making it easier for you to keep your teeth clean at home.

  • It can help to counteract the development of gum disease.

  • Scaling and polishing can help prevent bad breath

  • If you have a Riverside dental plan, you’ll have scaling and polishing included in your twice-annual hygienist appointment.

Does scaling and polishing hurt?

Many people find that scaling and polishing doesn’t cause any discomfort. However, if you have gum disease and it’s necessary for your hygienist to clean below the gums, it is known as root planing and can be uncomfortable. If you require this service, you’ll be given local anaesthetic to prevent you from experiencing any pain.

Airflow treatment

Airflow therapy is a dental hygiene treatment that both cleans the teeth and removes persistent staining and discolouration.

It uses a combination of water, compressed air and fine powder particles to produce high speed jets that can effectively clean all of the hard-to-reach areas of the mouth, including below the gum line.

Airflow is a popular alternative to scaling and polishing that can eliminate any dental biofilm, including plaque and tartar in just a single treatment session. It is painless, extremely accurate and a great option for a quick extra clean ahead of a special occasion, as well as for routine hygienist appointments.

What are the benefits of Airflow treatment?

There are many benefits associated with Airflow treatment:

  • Removes plaque faster than a scale and polish

  • Removes stains effectively

  • Can be used above and below the gumline

  • Makes whitening procedures more effective by removing plaque and tartar than could affect the consistency of whitening results

  • Water temperature can be adjusted for patient comfort

  • Non-invasive treatment

  • Can be used on dental restorations without causing any damage

  • Minimally invasive and painless

  • Suitable and less stressful for children and anxious patients
